Greater than the Sum of its Parts

For those of you who haven’t had the Triple Cream Brie Cheese with Wild Mushrooms from Trader Joe’s, you’re missing out! The same thing goes for Cliff House Red, a fantastic red blend from Spokane’s own Arbor Crest Wine Cellars. Either is fantastic on its own. However, the two together is truly remarkable. Add in some roses, blueberries, crackers, and cured meats and one has the fixings for an excellent date-night-in (my wife agrees). After all, a charcuterie board is greater than the sum of its parts.

The same can be said of wellness. I recently had a client contact me for help with her hip and knee pain, which she felt were connected somehow, as well as shoulder problems that were not as clearly definable. Those who know me professionally won’t be surprised to hear how excited I was. Not only are shoulders my favorite region to treat, this person was already connecting the dots! She was way ahead of the game by realizing how interconnected her body is. However, during her free Health & Goals Strategy Session, she mentioned difficulty controlling her bladder since giving birth 30+ years ago. Right away I knew she needed more than what Dotson Physiotherapy had to offer. In fact, she needed the help of a local pelvic floor specialist even more than she needed us.

However, the two are not mutually exclusive. At the time of writing this, she has spent two 45-minute sessions with the pelvic floor specialist to whom I referred her and has participated in a 90-minute Doctor of Physical Therapy Evaluation with me. Her pelvic floor specialist and I have communicated so as to ensure my plan of care will supplement hers, ensuring the best and most efficient outcomes. The last we spoke, this client expressed again how grateful she is for the hope I helped her find. Before reaching out to Dotson Physiotherapy, she assumed her bladder function would never recover; the pain in her knee and hip would continue to keep her from being active, and her shoulder dysfunction was just part of aging. Now, she is jogging without pain and, for the first time in decades, she looks forward to the time she will again be able to ski.
