The other day I was talking with a healthcare worker and mentioned the emphasis, I place on home exercises. She looked confused and said, “isn’t it pretty typical for patients to not do their home exercises?”
While there are several strategies that can reduce the nuisance of home exercise programs, like limiting them to 2-4 exercises and providing a handout they can review, the real “secret” to success is what I call the Million-Dollar method.
I do not like to run. I have no intention to ever run a marathon. If you, like my friend, offered to pay me $20 to run one, I would laugh at the idea the same way I laughed when he made the same offer. I just don’t value a twenty-dollar bill enough to sacrifice the time and effort necessary to accomplish this task. However, if you agreed to pay me $1,000,000 to run a marathon and I believed you I would start training today!
