The Mind of a PT: Snowshoeing
For Christmas my wife bought me a pair of snowshoes. As expected, I thoroughly enjoy snowshoeing with her and the dogs. Not only that, but the first time we went out they reminded me how small changes can have big impacts.
Thank goodness my wife is patient because I spent the first half-hour or so fiddling with where my foot was in relation to the pivot point on the snowshoe. Too far back and my calves had to work extra hard because of increased leverage. Too far forward and my efficiency was shot as I high-stepped-it, to keep the toe of my boot from dragging through the snow as I lifted my foot. However, with my foot positioned just right, walking in deep snow became a breeze. My weight easily shifted from mid-foot to the ball of my foot with minimal effort… I’m a nerd, I know.
BUT, if this is what I’m like out snowshoeing with my wife and dogs, imagine what it’s like when I’m working with a client! If you have recurring or persistent pain, I would be thrilled to help you figure out not only why you hurt, but what to do about it. Often times small changes can have big impacts.
