Learning the Scales: Investing part 1
Whether it’s investing in your health, finances, or relationships, there are three main variables that tip the scales on whether or not you’ll act - and to what degree. When the scales are tilted firmly one way, investing is an afterthought, not something to merely consider. However, tilted the other way, inactivity will maintain your status-quo. And, while this inactivity may save you from wasting time, money, or energy on a bad investment, it may just as easily keep you in a place of pain, dependence, and frustration. Either way, a complete failure to invest is guaranteed to keep you from living life to its fullest.
This is the first in a multi-part series exploring investing in yourself. Today’s post will introduce the three variables impacting your willingness to act. Future posts will explore these variables in greater detail, including healthy ways they can be adjusted in order to help you unlock your true potential.
Barriers - Barriers come in a variety of types including time, attention-demand, and financial cost. Suffice to say, the more imposing the barrier, the less likely you, or I, are to act. As such, when inactivity is causing you to stall-out, it is essential to identify the barriers in your way and eliminate or reduce then wherever possible.
Motivation - Motivation is entirely subjective - what motivates you may actually serve as a barrier to someone else. While motivation is a huge topic in self-help and personal growth curricula, healthcare providers rarely utilize it to help their patients realize their full potential. Your motivations are uniquely yours and uniquely inspiring. The more in touch you are with what motivates you, the more likely you are to pursue your dreams.
Trust - This is possibly the most abused and yet poorly-applied variable when inspiring others to invest. I say this because people trying to sell you something regularly insist you trust them. To be fair, trust is essential and should be earned. Whether it’s a healthcare worker, used car salesman, or your daughter’s boyfriend, if a someone cannot earn your trust they should be replaced - which I assume is easier said than done with your daughter’s boyfriend. However, what is often overlooked, to your detriment, is the professional who equips you to know and understand the process and thereby trust yourself. In our fast-paced, commoditized economy the focus is on maximizing the number of interactions, and therefore potential sales-per-hour. This approach does not allocate time for teaching customers - people - so they may trust themselves.
At Dotson Physiotherapy we work with clients to ensure these ‘scales’ are balanced in the way to generate maximal results with seemingly minimal effort. We partner with our clients to identify and overcome their unique barriers while leveraging our years of experience to identify and pre-empt common hang-ups before our clients even encounter them. We also take the time to learn what our clients are excited by and their dreams for the future. In doing so, we are able to help our clients find motivation within to overcome what obstacles remain between them and their potential. Finally, we build trust - not only in our skillset and expertise, but in our client’s own knowledge and understanding. It is our goal that every client is able to explain not only their role in achieving their desired future, but also the immediate impact each intervention is intended to make in moving them forward.
