If Nothing Changes… Nothing Changes
This crazy example is most relevant to people with neck and/or upper back pain. However, the principle can be applied to gradually developing pain in most areas of the body.
Imagine a person calls Dotson Physiotherapy because his knee pain prevents him from walking the dog. He notes that walking around his carpeted house is ok – if he doesn’t do too much of it in one day. However, walking the dog around the block is not even possible because of pain. Upon arriving at his house, the Dotson Physiotherapy specialist notices, through holes in his comfy sweat pants, that his knees are red and swollen! After inviting the specialist in, the client gets down on his knees and begins to “walk” towards the living room. When asked if that’s how he always walks and he says, “yep.”
Like I said, this is a crazy example. Of course walking around the block on your knees is going to hurt! However, the same principle applies to many clients - though in less obvious ways. Often, a couple small changes can have a dramatic impact on what we are able to do and enjoy in life! What would happen if this fictitious client wore knee pads?
At the time of writing this, I have three patients who first sought my help for near-constant neck and upper back pain. All three experienced relief from these symptoms within 15-minutes of meeting me. We hadn’t even discussed their medical history and goals yet! Making one small change not only brought relief, but hope.
